Types of Dormer Additions:
Shed Dormer Addition
A shed dormer is a simple dormer option. It is an easy way to create more room in your cape cod. At times, if you own a cape cod, I have received requests for an entire rear dormer on the backside of the home. See home addition plans. If you know the cape cod style home, the upper floor usually consists of 2 rooms split in the middle. The roof lines are low. The rear shed dormer now raises the ceiling height and side walls. In the case of the 2 upper bedroom style, the rear portion now has more headroom. Between the rooms, you can add a larger more spacious bathroom as well.
Gable Dormer Addition
A simple gable style dormer offers the most head room in your dormer home remodeling project. When installing this type of dormer addition, you usually install several across the front of your home mostly as an accent however they can be more than cosmetic.
Hip Dormer Addition
Hip dormers are very similar to a gable dormer however the front offers a hip adding a bit more design. The hipped dormer is big enough to fit a small mulled window or a large single window. You do eliminate the high front profile as known on gable dormer additions. Hip dormers were traditionally built on a home with a main hip roof as an accent.
Eye Brow or Eye Lid Dormer Addition
An eye brow or eye lid dormer addition is a simple low and or wide curved accent dormer. The eye brow dormer is built into the roof and usually includes a low window to allow light in to the attic.
Nantucket Dormer Addition
A nantucket dormer addition is a combination of 2 gable dormers connected in the middle with a shed dormer. The gable dormers actually can be true cathedral offering more height if needed. The shed aspect allows for a more controlled water run off when water flows from the flanking gable ends.
